Dragonball Evolution - Dragonball fans might either grimace or jump for joy about Dragonball Evolution, the Hollywood film adaptation of the famous Japanese manga turned to anime show that swept the world. Fans who have not seen the film must be warned that the movie is far from the Dragonball the anime or manga. Some aspects of the story were hacked and slashed to fit the Hollywood treatment that the producers were going for. In the movie, Goku, a high school student/Ki master at a young age, is faced with a task to save the world from Piccolo, an evil alien who was let loose after being cast away from Earth 200 years ago. Piccolo is after the mystical Dragonballs. These
Dragonballs, when completed, can grant the owner anything his heart desires. Naturally, Piccolo would wish for eternal power for him to be able to destroy and take revenge on Planet Earth. Now, Goku together with his friends, Chichi (also his lady love in the story), Bulma, Yamcha, Master Roshi and the rest of the gang, has to get a hold of the Dragonballs before Piccolo uses them first to destroy the Earth. The movie stars Justin Chatwin as Son Goku, Jamie Chueng as Chi Chi, Emmy Rossum as Bulma Briefs, Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi, Joon Park as Yamcha, and James Marsters as Piccolo. James Wong directed the film and Stephen Chow is head of production. Director James Wong decided to do some alterations to the look of the characters to make them seem more believable. Piccolo for instance had to look like he has been trapped for 2000 years so you would see that he looks decrepit in the film. Bulma in Dragonball Evolution would not be blue-haired. Instead the director decided to retain Emmy Rossum's brown hair and only put blue highlights on it. Justin Chatwin did not don a wig to make his hair Goku-like, either. Aside from the look, the characters in the film also did not resemble the attitude and the manners of the characters in the anime. For instance, Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi was not as animated as the old Roshi in the anime. The locations were not as futuristic as those in the anime, as well. The movie might disappoint rabid otakus about its deliberate deviation from the original plot of the film. Those new to Dragonball might have to do a little research to appreciate the film. There are also some scenes that seem to just come out of nowhere so it would help a lot to have some background on the characters first. Despite the film's F rating from Dragonball fans, Dragonball Evolution still has some positive reviews. This movie has that usual approach to present the fight between good and evil. Lead character has extreme powers but is undermined and the antagonist is evil to the core. It stayed true to that approach until the end of the film. Dragonball Evolution Spoiler: Do not leave your seats and wait for the rolling of the credits to finish. There is an extra scene that hints a continuation of sorts to the film.
