GI JOE Rise of Cobra is a live-action adaptation of the comic book series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero slated for release in 2009. The movie stayed true to the original plot and storyline with few rewrites of the script after the original draft of the script was leaked and severely criticized by fans. Larry Hama himself, creator and writer of the graphic comic book, did the rewrites and acted as the creative consultant of the film. GI JOE Rise of the Cobra tells the adventures of American soldiers, Ripcord and Duke, who joined team G.I. Joe after being rescued by an ambush led by the Baroness. The story is centered on the Joes' mission to stop James McCullen from using his
nanotechnology weapons to annihilate the whole city. The star-studded cast of the film include Channing Tatum as Duke, Dennis Quaid as General Hawk, Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, Rachel Nichols as Scarlett, Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje as Heavy Duty, Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Saďd Taghmaoui as Breaker, Karolína Kurková as Cover Girl, and Brendan Fraser as Sergeant Stone. Team Cobra includes actors, Jason Gordon Levitt as Commander Cobra, Christopher Eccleston as Destro, Sienna Miller as The Baroness, Byung-Hun Lee as Storm Shadow, Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, and Kevin J. O'Connor as Doctor Mindbender. Director Stephen Sommers intended to maximize the use of special effects, so six visual effects companies were hired to help make GI JOE Rise of the Cobra as action-packed as possible. A special code was even written to make one of the highlights of the film, the destruction of the Eiffel Tower, as believable as possible. Sommers also emphasized that the film does not glorify war, instead it emphasizes on heroism and brotherhood. The director said that the movie is not just about "beefy guys on steroids" who were sent to Vietnam. It's about an elite organization composed of the best soldiers from around the world, fighting for the cause of stopping evil from reigning over good. If you are a fan of the comic book franchise, the movie will be a great treat because according to reviews, it was able to add new flavor to the plot without completely eradicating the very essence of the comic book. The visual effects also provide a treat to audiences without overwhelming them with explosion scenes. If you think that GI JOE Rise of the Cobra is all about war, think again. The movie actually resembles movies such as James Bond, and Star Wars in a sense that it takes viewers into the world of elite army intelligence. This adaptation is a must-see not only for comic book fans and aficionados but for viewers who want to watch a great action-packed film with a twist, as well.
