The Hobbit has been postponed until 2012 but the reason for the delay is unknown. Earlier this year, it was announced Guillermo del Toro would direct the new film, based on JRR Tolkien’s novel. Lord of the Rings Oscar winner Peter Jackson is producing the project, and he and del Toro will pen the screenplay. aSir Ian McKellen has already signed on to reprise his role of Gandalf, and Andy Serkis is expected to play Gollum once again. Shooting was scheduled to start in New Zealand this winter (08/09), but it has now been postponed until 2010 - with the release day pushed back to 2012. We are awaiting confirmation of New Line Cinema.

Guillermo is a filmmaker of outstanding ability; he is a genuine storyteller who brings a tremendous amount of passion, energy and imagination to his work. A true original, Guillermo is a cinematic magician who has never lost his child-like sense of wonder. He understands that the fantastic must be grounded in the real and that all stories are only ever a reflection of ourselves,” say Jackson and Walsh. “We have long admired Guillermo’s work and cannot think of a more inspired filmmaker to take the journey back to Middle-earth. We are delighted ‘The Hobbit’ is in such trustworthy hands.
The book The Hobbit was the predecessor of The Lord of the Rings. Now, after three Lord of the Rings movies, two Hobbit movies will follow in 2011 and 2012.
