Iron Man 2 – A Primer
Iron Man 2 is an upcoming movie and the sequel to the 2008 movie starring actor Robert Downey Jr. It is also the second of the three planned Iron man movies. The general story revolves around Tony Stark who is a successful business man and a genius engineer. He designed an armor and became the super hero named Iron man. The movie is set to be released on May 7th this year in North America.
THE PLOT
After the first movie, when Tony Stark revealed his identity as Iron man, many people are clamoring that he share this technology to the world – more specifically the military. However, Tony does not want the technology to fall under the wrong hands so he refuses. Under the pressure of the media and the military, Tony Stark is also forced to take on several new enemies,
Things to watch for on the new movie is the arrival of Iron man’s colleague War machine as well as the coming of Whiplash, a new super villain.
THE CHARACTERS
Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man. He is very wealthy business tycoon and is the main protagonist in the film.
Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes / War Machine. If you watched the first film, Lt. Col. Rhodes is a trusted friend of Stark in the military. Here in the second movie, Stark will hand over the War Machine armor to him in order to help in his crusade to fight evil forces.
Mickey Rourke will play the role of the villain Ivan Vanko / Whiplash. Comic book fans will be a little bit surprised by this because the movie character will be more like a hybrid of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. The movie’s Whiplash is a son of a Russian scientist that developed the armor that he will be wearing. Also, as the movie trailer suggests, his main weapons will be electric whips.
Gwyneth Paltrow will again play Virginia “Pepper” Potts who is a business partner of Tony Stark. After the first movie, she replaced Stark’s old friend – turned enemy Obadiah Stane as the Chief Executive Officer of Stark Industries. She is also considered as the love interest of Tony Stark in the Iron Man series.
Another new addition in the sequel will be Scarlett Johansson who will play Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. She is Tony Stark’s assistant but unbeknownst to him, she is an undercover spy deployed by S.H.I.E.L.D., an undercover military organization.
Lastly, Sam Rockwell is cast as Justin Hammer who is Tony Stark’s antagonist in the film. In the comics, he is an old man but in the movie, he will be almost the same age as Iron Man. One interesting tidbit about Rockwell is that he is one of the first to be considered as Tony Stark in the first movie.
